Went to New Taj Mahal based on the recommendation of my hotels concierge.  As you can read other reviews, this is not a place to rave about but have a decent food.

The location is middle of Shepherd's market - a rather lively corner of London.  When I went there this place was the only empty place.  All other establishments were packed.  The seating area is one floor down from street level.  There are maybe 5 tables in total and the place is rather tight.

While I was entering the restaurant I saw a magazine article stating that Kiefer Sutherland (Mr. Bauer himself) picked this place as one of the three London restaurants to try.  So I decided to try (I was on the verge of leaving the place.)

The wait staff were courteous and prompt.  They told me that all the food was prepared fresh.  Maybe so, but as someone mentioned as well, food arrived too quick for that.  But it may be that chef is extremely quick.

I had chicken tikka with vindaloo sauce - presumably the hottest one on the menu - and it was spicy but not too spicy.  So I have asked for extra spice.  When mixed with it, it was a decent kick.

Naan unfortunately was pretty bad.  I didn't even bother to finish it.

Rice was ready made.  No taste.

I also have lentil with tikka sauce.  It was pretty good.

If I ever look for a an Indian fare in the region, I'd stop by again.

Portions are small and double check your bill. Higher prices on bill than menu. Cheeky. Food ok.

Avoid. Dal tadka was acceptable. Disappointed with paranthas, bhindi bhaji and saag paneer, staple dishes.

I was a little bit worried when I went into this restaurant. It was basically empty when I walked in, there was quite a lot of other people at the other places nearby.

The food was cooked very quickly and to be honest I did hear a lot of Pinging coming from the kitchen. I'm speculating that the food might not have been cooked fresh!

HOWEVER.... The food was pretty nice. The starters were OK and the main course was pretty tasty.

I had a mixed starter and a Chicken Dopiaza + Naan.

Price wise pretty cheap for London as well, about 8 quid for a main.

    Not amazing but not bad.

Small but great service - waiter and manager were very attentive.  As a chili head I ordered vindaloo, sweating good, induced 20 minutes of quiet meditation.  You spice freaks know that place.  Manager said you can special order "beyond Vindaloo".  Next time.  Bad reviews are from wimps.  BTW, they have mild curries too.
